Where was Brock Purdy when he found out about his lucrative 49ers contract extension? About to tee off on the golf course, much to the displeasure of his center Jake Brendel.

“He was supposed to tee off, and then he got the phone call,” Brendel told reporters after training camp practice Tuesday in Santa Clara. “So it was kind of annoying.”

All jokes from Brendel, of course, who knows how deserving Purdy is of the five-year, $265 million deal he signed in May after cementing himself as San Francisco’s franchise quarterback during his first three NFL seasons.

They were golfing on the back nine of The Olympic Club in San Francisco when Purdy got the life-changing call that made him the highest-paid player in 49ers history.

No, it was actually really cool,” Brendel continued. “He had a FaceTime from all the guys; I think it was coach [Kyle] Shanahan and [general manager] John Lynch, a couple other guys. They were all together and just super happy for him.

“And likewise, I mean, I was just there to support him. And it’s just cool — it’s cool to see young guys receive the recognition and the compensation that they deserve.”

Interestingly enough, while Purdy and Brendel were enjoying their offseason on the links, virtually the entire 49ers brass was on a boat in Cabo San Lucas, Mexico, getting the deal done.

“It was good fun,” Lynch told KNBR in May. “Jed York takes our senior leadership on a retreat to Cabo each year with our wives. We happened to be down there when the deal got consummated. [Vice president of football administration] Brian Hampton did a tremendous job working with [Kyle Strongin of Range Sports, Purdy’s agency] and bringing that deal home.

“We had actually gone out on a boat in Cabo, so we were out there; fortunately, we had service, talked to his agent first and said, ‘We’re good to go … Congratulations … Thank you.’ And then, ‘All right, I’m going to FaceTime Brock.’ I had no idea he was golfing at Olympic Club.”

If there’s one thing about the NFL, it’s that the business side of things never takes a break — especially when there’s a franchise quarterback to pay.
