It’s been an eventful week for Kansas City and we’re only at Wednesday.

The latest issue has seen fans having to evacuate Missouri Western State University in St. Joseph, Missouri where the Chiefs hold training camp due to inclement bad weather.

There was lightning in the area that was deemed unsafe for fans, yet the players and staff were able to continue practice.

The fans had to evacuate the premises out of caution, while it wasn’t quite close enough to the field that the Chiefs themselves had to leave.

This comes less than a week after the Chiefs had to close Friday’s practice to the public due to bad weather and flooding in the area.

If the players were ever to be evacuated or sent back to their dorm rooms, there is a bonus this year: new and comfortable mattresses.

“Kansas City Chiefs owner Clark Hunt doesn’t need to be told how uncomfortable a residence-hall mattress can be. He knows that all too well from his times visiting Chiefs training camp on Missouri Western’s campus,” said Jesse Newell of The Kansas City Star.

Hunt has a $1.6 billion net worth, so there stands reason to believe he could afford the new mattresses, or at least help facilitate the partnership.

“Something you’ve probably heard the players talk about over the years is how challenging it is to sleep in a dorm room,” Hunt said earlier this week.

“And I’ll second that, because when I’m here, I sleep in the dorm room.”

So, what did Hunt do? He brought in the new mattresses. However, it wasn’t his, nor the player’s idea.

Newell reported that the mattress upgrade came at the request of Chiefs trainer Rick Burkholder.

This training camp the Chiefs partnered with a local furniture rental company, that provided 180 high-quality mattresses to the Chiefs’ dorm rooms for both players and staff members.

“We’re always looking for ways to improve the amenities for our players,” Hunt said. “Certainly, sleep is really important, particularly at training camp.”

The last thing Clark wants is Patrick Mahomes not getting any sleep during training camp.

The weather and new mattresses aren’t the only things that have been in the headlines for the Chiefs.

The day prior, a fight broke out that saw head coach Andy Reid and Travis Kelce both get involved to break it up.

The fight started when two fellow rookies went at it with one another; offensive lineman Josh Simmons and defensive end Ashton Gillotte.

Simmons was blocking Gillotte a tick after the whistle, which the defender didn’t like. He shoved Simmons, before the massive offensive tackle landed a right hook to Gillotte’s face, albeit still with a helmet on.

The two proceeded to lock arms with one another, before teammates and coaches jumped in to break it up, including Reid and Kelce.

Tempers flare; that’s normal during this time of the year.

For the first time in nearly three years, the Chiefs are heading into the season not as the defending champions, after the embarrassing loss to the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl LIX 40-22.

All eyes will be on KC as the season nears. How will they respond? How will they get off the mat?
