NASHVILLE, Tenn. (WSMV) – The dog days of Tennessee Titans training camp are well-underway for rookie quarterback Cam Ward.
The Titans’ first overall draft pick is navigating the highs and lows of his first NFL training camp, with more lows as of late.
In Tuesday’s session, the first of camp with pads, Ward threw three interceptions.
According to Titans team writer Jim Wyatt, Ward was 5-of-8 in the 7-on-7 period in Wednesday’s practice and 6-of-15 in the team periods, making him 11-of-23 for the day. Also in that session, Ward was intercepted by cornerback Roger McCreary on a pass that was tipped by linebacker Cody Barton.
Ward’s head coach, Brian Callahan, spoke on the necessity of taking risks to learn in training camp.
“The daily updates and who wins and who loses and who performs well and who doesn’t, I think gets in the way sometimes of what we’re really after; which is we’re trying to develop every day and get better and we want guys to take some risks with how they play,” Titans head coach Brian Callahan said.
“And quarterbacks in particular, make throws or try throws that you’re maybe not going to do in a game, but see how it feels and see where—if you have that one in your bag or not. But that’s with a lot of players. You want guys to play fast, you don’t want them to fear failure, and then we’ll coach and correct any mistakes that come up. The idea is that you don’t make them again and you just keep pushing forward. But you want to guys not have a governor on and not have to be worried about making mistakes because that generally tends to be a pretty poor mindset to try to perform in.”

The Titans’ rookie quarterback has many staunch supporters on the roster already, with one of the most passionate being his former Miami teammate Xavier Restrepo.
“If he was the best at what he does, then there would be no room to improve,” Titans wide receiver Xavier Restrepo said. “So him, just like the rest of us, are just continuing to grow each and every single day. He still plays with so much confidence, and he’s still the guy you know.”
Cam Ward was not sweating his early missteps in training camp.
“I had tipped balls in high school, college, I had tipped balls here in practice, I’m going to have a tipped ball during the season,” Ward said. “So I’m not real worried about that. It’s about how you bounce back the next play, and you just got to keep on stacking good plays on top of each other.”
The Titans’ next open training camp practice is Saturday, August 2.
