Detroit Lions football has returned.

After a disappointing end to an injury-filled 2024 season in the first round of the playoffs against the Washington Commanders, the Lions are once again Super Bowl contenders.

They begin that push against the Los Angeles Chargers, led by former Michigan football head coach Jim Harbaugh. Neither team will use their projected Week 1 starters.

Lions coach Dan Campbell already stated that their top two 2025 draft picks, defensive tackle Tyleik Williams and offensive lineman Tate Ratledge, will not play. Backup quarterbacks Hendon Hooker and Kyle Allen will lead the offense. Harbaugh, meanwhile, announced that “veteran traditional starters” will not take the field in Thursday’s game. Former 49ers and Cowboys backup Trey Lance will start at quarterback for the Chargers for the first half, with rookie DJ Uiagalelei scheduled for the second half.
