Here’s a little trivia for you: Only three players have ever caught multiple playoff touchdown passes in a Tennessee Titans uniform – Corey Davis (3), Anthony Firkser (2) and A.J. Brown (2).

Today, we’re making the argument that the list should look like this: Davis (2), Firkser (2), Brown (2), Marcus Mariota (2).

As we’ve already discussed in this countdown, Mariota crafted one of the defining moments in Titans history when he threw a touchdown pass to himself in the Titans’ comeback playoff upset over the Kansas City Chiefs in 2018. In a just world, that moment gets a sequel.

Enter No. 8 on The Tennessean’s list of Tennessee Titans’ best moments.

Here’s the scene: Baltimore. AFC Divisional Playoffs. Jan. 11, 2020.

The No. 1 seed Ravens are on the ropes, with the underdog Titans up 14-6 in the third quarter and lined up on the 3-yard line hungry for another touchdown. Quarterback Ryan Tannehill comes off the field, replaced by Mariota for a gadget package. Mariota lines up in a pistol formation with Derrick Henry behind him and Khari Blasingame to his right.

Then Mariota motions out to the right of the formation. The Ravens defense doesn’t budge. At the very least, the Ravens think they’re prepared.

Snap. Henry receives. He lurches forward. Linebacker Josh Bynes crashes downhill. Henry sees the vacancy Bynes left behind and leaps forward, tomahawking the football into the middle of the end zone in the direction of Davis, who snuck between safeties Earl Thomas and Chuck Clark. Davis high-points the ball and lands in bounds. A beautifully executed trick play that puts the Titans’ lead out of the Ravens’ reach.

But… watch the play again. Watch Mariota. Thomas never looks Mariota’s way. Neither does cornerback Marcus Peters. Mariota’s wide open. The only Ravens defender whose head is even facing Mariota’s direction is 30 yards away being blocked by Taylor Lewan. Mariota started calling for the ball almost as soon as Henry caught the snap.

As it stands, that’s the catch that gives Davis the all-time lead in Titans playoff touchdown receptions. It’s also the defining moment in one of the defining upsets in Titans history. But if Henry had turned his head a little bit, it could’ve been a full-circle moment for the Mariota era as the Titans transitioned into the Tannehill era.
