Following the Jaguars’ scrimmage, head coach Liam Coen weighed in on Trevor Lawrence’s performance.
The Jacksonville Jaguars held an offense vs. defense scrimmage inside Everbank Stadium on Friday, and quarterback Trevor Lawrence was one of the standout performers.
“I thought he played awesome,” head coach Liam Coen said after the scrimmage.
According to ESPN’s Michael DiRocco, Lawerence was 19-of-27 passing in the scrimmage for 241 yards with three touchdowns to one interception.
John Shipley of Jaguars on SI wrote about Lawrence in his observations article that the Jacksonville quarterback was “absolutely fantastic” throughout the scrimmage–outside of the one interception.
Shipley added that Lawrence could have had a fourth touchdown pass if it weren’t for a drop in the end zone.
“I just thought he was making sharp, fast decisions,” Coen added. “The ball was getting driven constantly. I thought it was getting driven. He missed a few, for sure. …But I just thought he made good, sharp decisions, he drove the ball. I thought he ran the show well. It was a good night for him.”
Two priorities for Lawrence this offseason have been on his footwork and how he uses his eyes. Lawrence is also now operating in an offense that, as he put it earlier this offseason, has all the answers.
In part, Coen’s scheme has the answers because there are options on each play for the quarterback to choose from based on what the defense is doing. That, in turn, can put a lot on the plates of the players, but as Lawrence gets more reps, he’s getting more comfortable and confident, as we saw on Friday.
“I would say so,” Lawrence said earlier this week when asked if this offense was the most challenging one he’s been in. “But now looking at it, going through it now for the second time after OTAs, I feel so much more confident and comfortable in it. So the things that I thought were difficult at first have become more second nature and aren’t as big of a deal now.”
