Thursday’s good Giants news was that Malik Nabers practiced — despite hurting his shoulder on Tuesday — and made the play of the day.
Nabers left his feet to snag a deep Russell Wilson pass up the right sideline with corner Cor’Dale Flott in coverage, after drawing a pass interference flag on Flott earlier in the route.
The problem with the sixth practice of training camp, however, is that flags were raining down on the grass all morning.
Brian Daboll’s team committed eight penalties: four false starts on the offensive line, two offsides on the defense, Flott’s pass interference and a delay of game on Jaxson Dart’s second-string unit.
So Daboll took the rare step to make his entire team run four sprints between the goal line and the 10-yard line at the end.
There were still encouraging moments on Thursday.
On top of Nabers’ big catch, the rookie Dart delivered a nice completion downfield to Montrell Washington. Wilson hit Wan’Dale Robinson for a short slant that went for six on a misdirection play that fooled the defense.
Burns recorded a sack of Wilson on a rollout. And free agent signings Paulson Adebo and Jevon Holland forced Wilson incompletions on the goal line to help the first-team defense force a turnover on downs.
The sloppiness escalated throughout practice, though, including Art Green’s dropped interception of Jameis Winston and an apparent defensive line substitution issue prior to another snap, with tackle Roy Robertson-Harris running onto the field late.
Then the Giants’ backups committed four penalties in the span of 12 plays: the Dart delay of game, an Elijah Garcia offsides, a Dyontae Johnson offsides and a Stone Forsythe false start.
Daboll’s Giants consistently have demonstrated subpar-to-mediocre discipline in his first three seasons.
The Giants tied for the ninth-most flags (122) thrown against them in 2022, tied for 10th with 123 flags thrown in 2023, and ranked 11th last year with 134 flags thrown, according to NFLPenalties.com.
So after Winston hit receiver Lil’Jordan Humphrey for the final completion of the day, Daboll blew the whistle, called the team down to the goal line and had them run in between the staccato blows of his whistle.
He didn’t run them ragged, but his urgency was evident. In real games, as Daboll knows, those penalties and mistakes often rob the Giants of chances to make the difference-making plays they’re hoping to unlock in 2025.
KEEPING AN EYE ON CARTER
There was a play on Thursday Giants edge rusher Abdul Carter was slow to get up and appeared to hobble briefly and look at his right foot. He quickly resumed playing his normal reps and looked no worse for wear, so he might have just gotten stepped on.
But it’s noteworthy to point out, since doctors identified a stress reaction in his right foot at the NFL Combine in late February.
Carter was advised not to have surgery on his foot. The Giants weren’t concerned when they took him with the No. 3 overall pick in April. And Carter has looked like an exciting, explosive potential difference-maker through the spring and into the early summer.
So it’s worth documenting, because Carter is an important piece. The Giants need him healthy.
THREE D-LINEMEN MISS PRACTICE
Defensive tackles D.J. Davidson, Elijah Chatman and Jordon Riley all missed Thursday’s practice. Daboll said Davidson was gone because of a “personal thing,” although Davidson had gotten injured in Tuesday’s practice. And the team had no update on Chatman’s and Riley’s absences. … Rookie running back Cam Skattebo missed a second straight practice, despite Wednesday’s off day, and did light jogging on the side. So he hasn’t practiced since a heavy workload with the starters on Monday. … Right guard Greg Van Roten’s wife is giving birth to the couple’s second child, so the veteran missed Thursday’s practice and might be out on Friday, too. That meant even more first-team reps for Evan Neal at that position. … Safety Tyler Nubin practiced after getting his ribs checked on Tuesday. So did corner Tre Hawkins, who had basically missed the past two practices. … Dexter Lawrence saw an uptick in his reps after taking none on Tuesday and a limited amount on Monday. … Reserve corner Korie Black might have injured something in his foot or leg, because he was the only player who didn’t run sprints. He looked to be walking gingerly. … Wide receiver Jalin Hyatt returned in a limited capacity after missing four consecutive practices and caught a pass early in 11-on-11 from Wilson. Robinson also was back in the fold after taking Dane Belton’s knee to his leg earlier in the week. … Left tackle Andrew Thomas was seen doing steady ramp-up rehab work outside for the second straight practice as he prepares to return from a long Lisfranc recovery.
