The San Francisco 49ers finally got some good news in their receiving corps.
Fifth-round rookie wide receiver Jordan Watkins was back in action Saturday after missing Friday’s session for a still-undisclosed reason. Head coach Kyle Shanahan will talk to media when the team returns to practice Monday and may provide an update then.

Watkins’ absence Friday was worrisome given the 49ers’ injury issues at wide receiver. Brandon Aiyuk, Jauan Jennings and Jacob Cowing are all out of action. That’s opened the door for Watkins to have flashes in training camp according to reports from the SAP Performance Center. He hit the ground running after a day away from practice according to the SF Standard’s David Lombardi.
It’s good news for Watkins that he didn’t have to miss extended time. Rookie WRs have a tough time cracking the rotation in San Francisco’s offense and falling behind the curve would have made it even more difficult. He put together a strong set of OTAs and is now continuing to show out in camp.
With the injuries at the top of the depth chart the 49ers badly need to find another capable WR who can credibly take regular season snaps. So far Watkins looks to be positioning himself to be that player alongside Ricky Pearsall and veteran Demarcus Robinson. Getting back to practice quickly after missing a day will only help him in that quest.
