The New York Giants went through major changes in the quarterback room this offseason. After they moved on from Daniel Jones before the end of last season and Drew Lock hit free agency, they were left with Tommy DeVito as the only quarterback on the roster.

The Giants then agreed with Jameis Winston shortly before reaching an agreement with Russell Wilson to be their starter.

Although Winston likely never expected to be the Giants’ starter for the 2025 season, the quarterback room got crowded fast after they signed Wilson and drafted rookie Jaxson Dart.

Following the selection of Dart, many speculated that they may trade Winston, which Chris Simms says would make a ton of sense for Big Blue.

“You’re not gonna be able to put Jameis Winston on the practice squad,” Simms said on Pro Football Talk. “Somebody’s gonna get Jameis Winston to be their backup quarterback. He’s earned that. But with the Giants, yes. Russell Wilson is the starter — that’s been clearly stated.

“I think in the perfect world, they want Jaxson Dart to be the backup. Optics are real, ‘Wait, we drafted this guy in the first round and he can’t even become the backup quarterback. He can’t beat out Jameis Winston, who’s been on seven different teams the last few years?’ So all that, and they wanna position Jaxson Dart to take that next step.”

It’s very unlikely that the Giants are going to trade Winston after signing him to be the backup quarterback, plus his veteran leadership will go a long way for Dart. In fact, before being drafted by the Giants, Dart referred to Winston as his “dream teammate.”

This would leave local native Tommy DeVito as the odd man out for the Giants, someone who Simms believes is the perfect third-string quarterback:

“Not only is he a big deal in the area, he’s got some talent,” Simms said. “He’s the perfect third guy and probably a guy they can stash away on the practice squad if they have to and do it that way.”

In the likely scenario that the Giants put DeVito on the practice squad, there is no guarantee that another team won’t sign him.

As much as the Giants would love to get Dart’s feet wet with some playing time in year one, it wouldn’t be the worst thing for the rookie to sit and learn behind the veterans this season, especially if the team is playing well.
