Saturday the Raiders kicked their training camp up a notch. They headed over to Allegiant Stadium for the day for a mock game. Geno Smith led out the Silver team and Aidan O’Connell led out the Black team.
Basically the Silver team was the Raiders first team and the Black team was the second team guys. At least for most of the day. And Geno Smith lit the place up.
The first drive of the day, he went 6-for-8, with completions to Michael Mayer, Ashton Jeanty, Brock Bowers, Jakobi Meyers, and Tre Tucker, then finishing it off with a touchdown to Bowers. Then, after the black team was stopped for a punt, Geno came back out and on three completions, drove down the field for another score. The first two completions went to TE Michael Mayer, then he again finished it off with a surgical strike to Brock Bowers on the left side of the end zone.
Geno would get one more shot in the first half, and he again found Brock Bowers wide open for a big gainer. Then finished it off finding a wide open Dont’e Thornton in the back of the end zone.
Late in the ‘game’ Geno came back out, this time working with reserve receivers. But the result was the same. Phillip Dorsett got behind Sam Webb deep and Geno launched a perfect bomb to him for the long touchdown. He then ran it in on the two-point conversion.
Four drives, four touchdowns. Spreading the ball around to seven different receivers and giving everyone a taste of the Geno Smith to Brock Bowers connection.
Yeah, it was against guys who aren’t expected to start, but it was still a promising day for what Geno Smith brings to this team. And it’s a level of play I haven’t seen from the QB position here in some time.
