Football season is right around the corner, and NFL teams are already reshuffling their rosters. Unfortunately for one former Texas A&M running back, he’s back on the market just months after signing a new deal.
On Friday evening, the New England Patriots released veteran backup Trayveon Williams, who had signed with the team in May. This kind of roster churn is common in the NFL, but the timing offers Williams a shot at landing elsewhere before training camps are in full swing.

Williams was drafted in the sixth round by the Cincinnati Bengals following a standout junior season at A&M, where he earned First-Team All-SEC and Second-Team All-American honors. He spent six seasons with the Bengals, primarily contributing on special teams. When his playing time began to decrease, he made the move to New England this summer.
Running back roles have evolved over the past few decades, with most teams now carrying three backs, two of whom must also contribute on special teams. Williams, despite being in the latter stages of his career, has remained roster-relevant thanks to his versatility and willingness to play special teams.
