A week before the New England Patriots‘ preseason opener, the team held a dress rehearsal scrimmage at Gillette Stadium on Friday.

The roster was split into Team White and Team Blue for the matchup. Inside linebackers coach Zak Kuhr served as the coach for the blue team, while the white team was led by offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels.

Drake Maye, Christian Elliss and Jaylinn Hawkins captained the white team, and Hunter Henry, Jabrill Peppers and Brenden Schooler were the blue team captains. The hope was to make it feel as close to a real game as possible. Season ticket-holders filed into Gillette Stadium to get another sneak peek at what is potentially in store for them in the regular season.

Team White ultimately came out on top after Maye threw an interception with less than two minutes left on the clock. The final score was 47-38 in favor of the blue team.

Here were the five standouts from Day 9 of training camp practice:

LB Robert Spillane

Robert Spillane had his hand in everything at the scrimmage. By the end of the night, he tallied one interception and one fumble recovery. The 29-year-old veteran defender has a good nose for the ball, and he seems to always be in the right place at the right time. That heightened awareness and all-around playmaking abilities are why the Patriots didn’t blink when signing him to a three-year, $33 million deal.

S Jaylinn Hawkins

Speaking of having a good nose for the football, veteran safety Jaylinn Hawkins snagged two interceptions on Friday. He often gets forgotten at a position spearheaded by Kyle Dugger and Jabrill Peppers, but he’s a savvy veteran who provides valuable depth for the Patriots. One of the interceptions came on a trick play pass attempt from wideout Demario “Pop” Douglas.

CB Alex Austin

Alex Austin put the proverbial nail in the coffin of Drake Maye’s final drive attempt in the scrimmage by coming up with the game-sealing interception. The veteran corner jumped in front of an intended pass from Maye, picked the ball in stride and could have returned it for a touchdown. It was a heads-up play from a cornerback who has seen an uptick in top reps with Christian Gonzalez and Carlton Davis III sidelined in practices.

QB Joshua Dobbs

Veteran quarterback Joshua Dobbs had the play of the day with a deep touchdown pass to wide receiver Kayshon Boutte. More importantly, he didn’t turn the ball over during the scrimmage. The latter has haunted the Patriots in recent years, and it proved to be an issue for Drake Maye, who threw two interceptions on Friday. Granted, it was the first time he threw a pick in training camp this year.

WR Kayshon Boutte

Kayshon Boutte continues to come up with big plays at training camp. He stole the show once again with a deep reception over cornerback Marcellas Dial for a touchdown. The 2023 sixth-round draft pick is beginning to look like a steal as time passes. He’s also looking more like a lock to make the 53-man roster through the first nine training camp practices.
