Baker Mayfield was drafted with the first overall pick in the 2018 NFL Draft. He went ahead of the likes of Lamar Jackson and Josh Allen in the same class, and while he has hopped around unlike his classmates, he couldn’t be happier to be in Tampa Bay now.
Mayfield described his journey to Tampa Bay, saying it went “Exactly how I drew it up. . .” while speaking to ESPN’s Dan Graziano. After the Browns traded for DeShaun Watson, Mayfield went from Carolina to Los Angeles with the Rams before going to Tampa Bay.
He adds, “You can’t ask for anything else, especially from the journey I’ve had, with people telling me how to act and how to do certain things. Just coming here and just realizing this is a great place that allows you to have success. They give you all the tools and necessary things to be able to have success.”
Mayfield attributes his connection with Todd Bowles during the draft process in 2018 as a reason he was excited to sign with the Buccaneers. In Graziano’s piece, he adds that Bowles has always told him to be himself, and it has allowed him to play his best version of football in his career during his tenure in Tampa Bay.
Jason Licht has made it clear that Baker Mayfield is the quarterback of the future, look for an extension to be the next milestone in his career after finding his forever home.
