The first week of the NFL preseason is upon us, and for the New York Jets, it’s the first look at the Aaron Glenn era in game action.

New York takes the field in Lambeau against the Green Bay Packers on Saturday night. This will be the first time many newcomers will get their first game action for Gang Green.

Or so that is the thought.

Like many organizations around the league, the Jets need to decide if it is worth playing their full collection of starters during Saturday’s contest. Some teams choose to keep their starters off the field until the regular season.

Others choose to play their starters as much as possible.

Which side will the Jets be on? Glenn opened up a little bit about that very topic after Monday afternoon’s practice.

Jets noncommittal on starters

There is no exact science that details whether teams are right to sit their starters or not during the preseason. The Kansas City Chiefs played their starters throughout the 2024 preseason and still made it to the Super Bowl.

The Philadelphia Eagles, meanwhile, chose to sit out their starters throughout the exhibition contests. They managed to win the whole thing last year.

Glenn’s decision won’t be a reflection on whether or not the team can compete for a playoff spot in 2025. Perhaps that is why, when asked about it on Monday, the former Lions defensive coordinator was quick to focus on their upcoming opponent.

“This will be an important week for us,” Glenn said. “Good week to get ready to play Green Bay. Really good team, good challenge for us, and we’re looking forward to it.”

Unlike the last few years, the Jets have one of the youngest rosters in football. They have a new quarterback in Justin Fields, and players under 30 years old across their team.

That could lead Glenn to choose to play some of the starters at least for a short amount of time on Saturday. The more reps they get, the better it will be to determine how ready they are for the regular season.

If Jets fans were hoping for a more precise answer, though, their new head coach provided at least a timeline for when a decision will be made regarding their starters.

“I will answer that question later on in the week.”

The Jets will next hit the practice field Tuesday morning at 8:30.
