The Houston Texans’ offense eventually will come around, right?
Right?
Even after leaving the Methodist Training Center next to NRG Stadium for a four-day trip to The Greenbrier, the Texans‘ defense still manhandled all three offensive units during team drills. Pro Bowl quarterback C.J. Stroud was picked off by C.J. Gardner-Johnson, who promtly took it back to the house for a touchdown on the opening drive of team drills.
Monday’s interception marked the fifth straight practice where Stroud has hit the opposing defense for a turnover. He wasn’t alone, however, when it came to the turnovers on offense. Graham Mertz ran into pressure behind the line of scrimmage and tossed a pick to Nick Niemann for another touchdown.
On the final play of practice, Davis Mills directly fired off another interception, this time landing in the arms of E.J. Speed, who didn’t return it to the house, but still made a solid play on the ball.
“When I look at our defense throughout Training Camp, they’re competitive, they’re edgy, they play together and I see a really good unit gelling together, defensively,” Texans coach DeMeco Ryans said after practiceThey’re making a lot of plays and they’re playing with enthusiasm as well. Not only just the enthusiasm, but they’re really executing very well and credit to those guys really putting in the work with their coaches to be in on the details. They’re doing an outstanding job.”
It wasn’t just the turnovers from quarterbacks at stood out. Multiple receivers dropped passes, even when protection was promising from players like Tay Ersery, who shifted over to left tackle in place of the injured Cam Robinson.
The run game also remained obsolete, forcing new play-caller Nick Caley to call more passing plays to find life. Nick Chubb and Woody Marks both struggled to find space, though the latter did break away for a first-down run with the second-team offense.
“We are making each other better here. Our offense is making our defense better, defense is making our offense better. That’s what training camp is all about,” Ryans said of the offense. “So, I’m very excited to see where our guys are. Really, I’m excited to see them go play against someone else. It’s becoming that time of camp where it starts to get a little chippy, guys are tired of going against each other.”

The Texans return to practice tomorrow at the Greenbrier. Hopefully, things will change for the offensive line and protection around Stroud.
