KEARNEY, Neb. (KSNB) – University of Nebraska at Kearney said Tuesday that alcohol sales have been approved for the upcoming football season.
Alcohol sales will be limited to football games, beginning with the Sept. 6 home opener against Chadron State. The university will evaluate this change for other sports in the future.
“Offering beer and other alcoholic beverages in a regulated and responsible manner is a positive step for our program and our fans,” said UNK Athletic Director Marc Bauer. “We’ve allowed alcohol consumption in our Loper Fan Fest Tailgate area for years with no incidents. This policy allows us to extend that experience inside the stadium while prioritizing safety and fan behavior.”
UNK will work with a licensed third-party vendor to manage alcohol sales. In addition, staff will be trained and required to follow all local and state regulations.
Alcohol will be sold beginning when gates open and ending at the conclusion of the third quarter. Drinks can be consumed in both home and visitor areas but will not be permitted in the south end zone grass area or the designated Kids Zone.
To follow the introduction of alcohol sales in the stadium, UNK will also be implementing a no re-entry policy and a new bag-check policy to streamline security at entrances. Additional details will be announced before the season kicks off.
“This is about adding to the fan experience while remaining committed to safety, accountability and compliance,” Bauer said. “We’re doing this the right way.”
In alignment with UNK’s mission to support student wellness, 5% of annual revenue from alcohol sales will fund alcohol education and counseling programs through Student Health and Counseling.
The university said the new alcohol policy will be reviewed annually, with input from university leadership and law enforcement. Additional signage and messaging will promote responsible behavior throughout the season.
