Zach Wilson is approaching his first preseason game with the Miami Dolphins.

During the Dolphins’ 11 training camp practices, Wilson has had the opportunity to prove he deserves a roster spot.

He has the chance to further make his case in Miami’s three upcoming preseason games as well. That first preseason game will come against the Chicago Bears on Sunday.

This offseason, Wilson was a “direct, calculated target” to backup starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters in March, as the Deseret News previously reported.

Wilson’s recent comments backed that up.

“I felt like they really wanted me to be here,” he said.

The Dolphins also added Quinn Ewers to the quarterback room after selecting Ewers in the seventh round of the 2025 NFL draft.

But despite the addition of Ewers, McDaniel said last week that Wilson remains his No. 2 quarterback.

“Zach is the backup quarterback, and it’s up to players to adjust that,” McDaniel told reporters on Wednesday.

At the time, it was not a competition in McDaniel’s mind, but “the competition can become real if the players make it,” he said.

What has Wilson done to earn that spot on the depth chart?

Zach Wilson Dolphins training camp updates

Miami beat reporters have chronicled Wilson’s highs and lows during training camp.

Here’s what they and Wilson’s teammates have shared about Wilson on social media during training camp.

Dolphins QB Zach Wilson has looked “really sharp” through two days of training camp.

Per Travis Wingfield, he is playing on time and the ball has been jumping off his hand.

Willie Gay is all over the shot to the corner of the end zone in mid red zone from Zach Wilson. He wanted Mattison but Gay took away the window

Zach shows off the arm talent on a boot against his body, flips the hips and just flips the thing up the sideline to Nick Westbrook-Ikhine for a gain of about 20, beating the converging safety (Saunders)

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) July 28, 2025

Matthew Dickerson immediate dispatch for a would-be sack on Zach Wilson, but Wilson continues the play and throws a short ball to Jaylen Wright off the body, impressive catch and rolls in behind a convoy.

Next play, Wilson with a good ball to Tarik Black for a score

Zach Wilson with a nice 25 yard reception from Easy E.

Zach Wilson connected with Taj Washington on. 50 yard play. He ran that 35 yards after the catch, getting to the 20-yard line.

Zach Wilson with a beautifully placed pass to Tarik Black for a 15 yard gain.

Zach Wilson just had 3 straight completions, which included a Aj Henning first down catch with a blitz in his face.

Zach rips one between two defenders to Pharaoh Brown who high points it and hangs on through contact

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) July 29, 2025

Pharoah Brown with a nice 20 yard reception on a bullet from Zach Wilson. He caught the pass and actually waved at the safeties, who tapped him up to stop the play.

Brown is having a good day today.

Cornell Armstrong with the would-be sack on Zach Wilson, who scrambled out the pocket but got tagged up before he can throw it.

“Zach Wilson had the most consistent day out of the QBs today”

— Perfect1on (@PerfectionIs111) July 29, 2025

One of my favorite, innocuous reps by Zach all camp – he’s got Tahj coming across the field around the LOS, he hadn’t cleared the defender, but he was going to because of his speed, so Zach throws it early and it turns into a nice catch and run. Tahj continues to flash, too.

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) July 30, 2025

Grayson Murphy with a sack on Zach Wilson in goal line work. Murphy was impressive last camp before suffering a knee injury in the exhibition season and picked up exactly where he left off.

Storm Duck’s shows length and feel as he sinks back into the window on a Zach Wilson throw for Waddle to the corner – forced the incompletion

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) July 30, 2025

Wow. Zach Wilson with a laser to Dee Eskridge on the run.

The arm talent, man.

Easy E with a 20-yard reception from Zach Wilson, who was flushed out the pocket by Grayson Murphy.

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) August 1, 2025

Jack Jones with an end zone interception of a Zach Wilson pass. He’s been hot and cold. If he played with consistency he’d be a starter.

21-14 defense lead in my imaginary game.

Zach drills one to NWI – fastball that popped the pads right in front of KJ Britt. Westbrook-Ikhine has a lot of production over the last 4-5 practices.

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) August 1, 2025

Tanner Conner 50/50 win for 6 from Zach Wilson– little throwback that Jordan Colbert appears to have measured, but the ball got over the top of him, gets a finger tip on it and Conner stays with it, and on his feet, for the 26 yard touchdown.

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) August 1, 2025

Another blitz forces Wilson to chuck and pray as the ball sails over everyone. When Weave wants to get into his bag, he can really heat up these QBs and confuse them.

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) August 2, 2025

Zach Wilson threw a 15 yard slant to Easy E. Bullet. Great placement, allowed him to get down.

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) August 2, 2025

Zach Wilson has a completion for similar yards on 3rd and 12 to Ezukanma. OL settling in on some of these pressures here a little bit. https://t.co/xxIbm8lsGg

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) August 2, 2025

Willie Gay gets the easiest interception of his life. Zach Wilson’s got Taner Conner wide open, ball pops off his hands straight into the air and Gay is Johnny on the Spot. Seems fitting after all the near INTs he’s had – kinda like when a baseball player hits 3 line drives that…

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) August 2, 2025

Kion Smith let Patrick McMorris sack Zach Wilson on a blitz that killed a 3rd and 10 in Wilson’s situational period.

Wilson looks like the Jets starter today.

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) August 2, 2025

Willie Gay drops a pick on Zach Wilson pass on his first throw of this situational period.

That’s Gay’s 4th dropped pick of camp.

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) August 2, 2025

Zach Wilson doesn’t set his feed and under throws Tahj Washington.

Man, this guy has accuracy issues.

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) August 2, 2025

This is illegal video, which I typically don’t share cause it gets us pow powed.

But this needs to be said.

Quinn Ewers has impressed. But we can create the same kind of highlight reel for Tua and Zach Wilson. The sign of a good QB is consistency, and only Tua is delivering…

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) August 2, 2025

Isaiah Johnson with a reroute that takes the WR (didn’t get a #) off his track, Wilson tries it anyway but it winds up going right to Jordan Colbert who picks it and takes it back. Colbert gets the credit, but Johnson made it happen with the assist.

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) August 3, 2025

The Zach Wilson-led offense goes backwards on a drill where the offense is backed up to the -3. Two penalties puts the ball inside the 1 and Mike Hilton crashes off the edge for the tackle on the back in the end zone. Might be the first camp safety I’ve ever seen.

— Travis Wingfield (@WingfieldNFL) August 3, 2025

Zach Wilson with a 5 yard scramble in his red zone rep.

— Omar Kelly (@OmarKelly) August 3, 2025

Zach had two good throws in the red zone 3rd down end of game portion.

From the +4 – good ball to Ezukanma who got inside of Cornell Armstrong but couldn’t make the sliding catch.

From the 9 – good strong throw far hash to Tahj for 6.

The Dolphins studied two years of film of Wilson. How they transformed Tua impacted their decision to sign Wilson. Bevell: “People think Tua couldn’t play and you see how he’s playing now. And so we wanted to be able to do that with Zach. And we love what we see.” https://t.co/YP4hTcsDoi
