Tuesday’s training camp practice was cut short for Pittsburgh Steelers rookie quarterback Will Howard. Howard suffered a hand injury that is reportedly a broken bone that will cause him to miss all of the preseason. If the team confirms this, the Steelers are down to just three quarterbacks, which isn’t how they want to go through the preseason.
But just as important, when the Steelers add that fourth quarterback, it can’t just be a camp body. With Howard out, Skylar Thompson is the team’s No. 3 quarterback, so here are three free agents who would push Thompson for that final roster spot.

We don’t view any of these guys as starters, but the team’s No. 3 quarterback can turn into the No. 2 in a hurry, so Pittsburgh must do its due diligence to find a player to fill in the next three weeks. When teams cut their rosters do to just 53, there will be some better options on the market for the Steelers to sign, especially if Howard’s injury extends into the regular season.
