On Monday, head coach Kevin O’Connell said McCarthy will play in the Vikings’ preseason opener on Saturday against the Houston Texans. This will be McCarthy’s first taste of a real-game situation since he suffered a season-ending injury at the beginning of last preseason vs. Las Vegas.
McCarthy said he’s excited to play in a true game environment against another team’s defense and that it will be a test for the team as a whole.
When asked about a scrum between Vikings players at Saturday’s practice, McCarthy told reporters he’s ready to tap into his roots as a former ice hockey enforcer when standing up for his teammates.
“Those guys are my brothers,” McCarthy said. “I’m the first guy in the fight, no matter what.”
The Vikings’ game against the Texans on Saturday starts at 3 p.m. at U.S. Bank Stadium.
