If there is one pass-catching running back to model your game after, it’s Christian McCaffrey.
Atlanta Falcons dual-threat back Bijan Robinson hopes to do just that, and had an opportunity to learn from the master himself this offseason while working out with the 49ers star and his brother, Washington Commanders wide receiver Luke McCaffrey.
Robinson spoke to Bleacher Report’s Mike Golic Jr. and John Abraham after Falcons training camp practice on Tuesday and was asked about what he took away from his workouts with McCaffrey.
“Obviously, just his vet experience and just how long he’s been in this league,” Robinson said. “We did a lot of route techniques, a lot of route running this offseason. Just seeing how he just creates leverage on routes and on choice routes and stuff like that, it’s been amazing to learn from that.
“And then on the field, it’s been showing. Just trying to be unguardable at all aspects. Don’t let a safety, corner, linebacker — doesn’t matter who’s on you — don’t let them get their hands on you. Because when you catch the ball, they still got to tackle you, and that’s when you break some more long runs and stuff like that. That’s what I learned from him the most this offseason.”
The admiration for each other’s games goes both ways, as McCaffrey praised Robinson when asked about their offseason workouts.
“It was awesome. He just hit us up and wanted to get some work in, and obviously someone like that who I have the utmost respect for as a player and a person,” McCaffrey said on July 28. “I was super fired up, he joined us for a little bit.
“He’s a special guy, special person and a special player.”
The Falcons selected Robinson with the No. 8 pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, and after an impressive rookie season, the University of Texas product record 304 carries for 1,456 rushing yards and 14 touchdowns on the ground while catching 61 passes for 431 yards and one touchdown through the air in 17 games last season.
Now entering Year 3, the 23-year-old has a chance to take his game to the next level.
