The Denver Broncos had one of the best defenses in the NFL last season, finishing the year ranked eighth in takeaways (25), third in points allowed (18.3) and first in sacks (63).

San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan, who will host the Broncos for a joint practice on Thursday and preseason game on Saturday, was asked earlier this week if he’s eager to see his offense tested against Denver’s defense.

“Definitely, and not just our offense, our whole team,” Shanahan said. “I think the Broncos have a very good team. They were sneaky good last year. You could see them improve throughout the whole year. They got a bunch of good, young talent, and they had a bunch of good players already. So, I expect them to be one of the better teams in the league this year.”

Denver went 10-7 last fall and qualified for the playoffs for the first time since 2015. This offseason, they added key pieces including linebacker Dre Greenlaw, safety Talanoa Hufanga, tight end Evan Engram and running back J.K. Dobbins. With an improved roster and a promising young quarterback, the Broncos could prove to be a formidable foe in 2025, and Shanahan’s taken notice.
