The 49ers’ running back room got a little bit lighter on Thursday as 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan announced rookie Jordan James suffered a broken finger.
“Jordan James broke his finger, so he’s getting surgery on that,” Shanahan told reporters. “He’ll be out a couple of weeks.”

San Francisco selected James in the fifth round of the 2025 NFL Draft after ammassing 1,267 rush yards during his junior season with the Oregon Ducks.
The injury leaves the 49ers with just four running backs (Christian McCaffrey, Patrick Taylor Jr., Corey Kiner, Ameer Abdullah) available for San Francisco’s first preseason game on Saturday against the Denver Broncos with Isaac Guerendo already out with a shoulder injury.
Additionally, Shanahan said Christian McCaffrey is unlikely to play which should give ample time to the remaining ball carriers on the 49ers’ roster.
