ROCKFORD, Ill. (WTVO/WQRF) — The Chicago Bears and Miami Dolphins won’t be the only ones playing ball at Soldier Field Sunday. At halftime of their preseason game, girls from Harlem Middle School and from the Rockton-Roscoe Junior Indians will be playing a flag football scrimmage.
The Bears are big supporters of flag football. They have made a $50,000 donation to the Rockford Park District to start up a middle school league this fall.
The girls from the two teams practiced Thursday evening on the new turf field at Clarence Hicks Sports Complex on the southwest side of Rockford which is part of the Rockford Park District.
It’s a big deal for the girls to be able to play on the same field as the Bears in front of a huge crowd. Adding to the excitement Sunday is the fact that Harlem Middle School seventh grader Ava Strofus will be the Bears honorary captain for the preseason game. She will participate in the pre-game coin toss.
