The Jacksonville Jaguars have completed another week of training camp. After making it through 12 practices, they’ll face off against the Pittsburgh Steelers on Aug. 9 in the first preseason game.

It will be the first game for Liam Coen as head coach of the team and the first showing for the new-look Jaguars against a different team. After an offseason of makeovers, the Jaguars will get a chance to see how the team performs in competition.

It’ll be the first showing for 2025 No. 2 overall pick Travis Hunter, who will play on offense and defense. It’s unknown if Hunter will see time at both positions during the preseason, but he’s made strides so far in his career.

All about timing: Trevor Lawrence explains missed connections with Brian Thomas Jr. at Jaguars training camp

This week we saw the latest progress update Hunter spent substantial time on offense and defense in the same practice and in the same period. Hunter wore a white practice penny over his teal jersey, allowing him to switch sides without completely changing jerseys.

He’s been one of the camp standouts from his ability to switch his brain and perform alone. We didn’t include him in the camp standouts this week, because it’s almost expected that he’s standing out.

The same can be said for quarterback Trevor Lawrence who has continued to look sharp during his first camp in Coen’s system. Let’s take a look at this week’s standouts ahead of the first preseason game.

Kind of in the same regard as Lawrence and Hunter, cornerback Tyson Campbell has reached a level of consistency that is expected throughout the remainder of camp. Campbell had a noticeably good day on the ninth practice of training camp, frustrating receiver Brian Thomas Jr. to the point of Thomas kicking a football after losing a 1-on-1 rep against him.

Jaguars TE Brenton Strange continues to build on strong offseasonJacksonville Jaguars tight end Brenton Strange (85) runs through the poles during an NFL training camp second session at the Miller Electric Center, Thursday, July 24, 2025, in Jacksonville, Fla. [Doug Engle/Florida Times-Union]

When naming the standout performers of training camp, Brenton Strange is near the top. He had two one-handed grabs in the same practice on Day 11 of training camp. His versatility as a route runner, pass catcher and run blocker has earned him a potentially large role in Coen’s system.

Jaguars nickel Jourdan Lewis makes diving interception during practice No. 10Jacksonville Jaguars cornerback Jourdan Lewis (2) hauls in a pass while running drills during an NFL training camp fifth session at the Miller Electric Center, Monday, July 28, 2025, in Jacksonville, Fla. Jourdan Lewis had the highlight play of the stadium scrimmage with his diving interception against Jacksonville’s reserve offense. He replicated that play against Lawrence with another diving interception, making a full extension to reel in the pass and create a turnover for Jacksonville’s defense. He’s been the free agent signing with the most impact so far.

The re-signing of Dawuane Smoot has seemingly reenregized Jacksonville’s defensive line. With versatility to play multiple positions across the line, Smoot has helped with depth and experience on the defensive side of the ball. On Day 10 of camp, he would have been credited with at least two sacks if it was live and was potentially in on a third.

Could a change of coaching staffs be the push third-year linebacker Yasir Abdullah needs? Abdullah has been featured with Jacksonville’s top defense at times during training camp as a SAM linebacker. It’s clear Anthony Campanile and company have a need for the position. They acquired Dennis Gardeck this offseason and placed him on PUP to start camp. Abdullah could emerge as a solid piece in Jacksonville’s defense if he continues his play through the preseason.
