Did the New York Jets misstep when signing quarterback Justin Fields this offseason?
Longtime WFAN radio host Mike Francesa might believe so, questioning the quarterback’s passing ability despite his knack for big plays on the ground.
Appearing on WFAN with Sal Licata, the Sports Pope—who recently discovered the infamous “Giants picnic” is totally legitimate—was asked if he is a fan of the 26-year-old signal caller.
“Not particularly,” Francesa said. “I think he can make some big plays. I think he will make some 50-yard runs for some touchdowns, and I think he is a well-below-average passer.”
Entering his fifth NFL season, Fields agreed on a two-year contract with the Jets this offseason worth up to $40 million with $30 million in guarantees after starting six games for the Pittsburgh Steelers last season, leading the team to a 4-2 record before being benched in favor of veteran Russell Wilson.
New York marks his third stop throughout his career, and he has clearly shown he offers upside, but this is his last chance to show that upside is more than just potential, and it could turn into fruition.
For Fields, the opportunity in New York is about showing why he was a top 15 pick in the 2021 NFL draft. The Jets are betting that his explosive athleticism can finally be paired with consistent quarterback play.
Francesa, however, remains unconvinced, framing Fields as a runner who can dazzle but a passer who struggles to deliver.
For better or worse, the 2025 season with the New York Jets will be a significant turning point in Justin Fields’ career.
