The 49ers announced a pair of roster moves Friday afternoon.
San Francisco re-signed quarterback Tanner Mordecai to a one-year contract and made room for him by placing six-year NFL veteran wide receiver Equanimeous St. Brown on the season-ending injured reserve list.
Mordecai, 6-foot-2 and 218 pounds, rejoins the 49ers after being waived Monday. He originally signed with the organization as an undrafted free agent out of Wisconsin on May 6, 2024, and spent the 2024 NFL season on the practice squad.
St. Brown, 6-foot-5 and 214 pounds, signed with San Francisco on Tuesday following the team’s decision to cut fellow veteran wideout Andy Isabella. St. Brown initially worked out for the 49ers on July 21, and after appearing in two games for the New Orleans Saints in 2024.
The re-addition of Mordecai simply is for depth behind recently extended star Brock Purdy.
Mordecai completed 850 passes for 9,857 yards and 85 touchdowns over six collegiate seasons — with Oklahoma (2018-20), SMU (2021-22) and Wisconsin (2023) — and keeps the 49ers’ backup quarterback situation familiar.
St. Brown’s situation appears extra unfortunate for him and San Francisco, considering his presumed role as a depth piece to a wide receiver room with many questions, especially as the 49ers remain without one of Purdy’s top targets in Brandon Aiyuk.
The older brother of big-time Detroit Lions wideout Amon-Ra St. Brown, Equanimeous has carved out a solid career for himself, having collected 63 receptions for 928 yards and two touchdowns in 62 career NFL games after three years at Notre Dame.
