Recent Dolphins draft pick suffers ill-timed injury that could derail his bid for roster spot in more ways than one originally appeared on A to Z Sports.
The Miami Dolphins‘ youth movement this offseason is one that shows up in just about every position room on the roster. One of the position groups that you don’t see it, however, is the team’s EDGE rush room, where Miami is actually welcoming back two top-flight starters to the field in 2025 between Bradley Chubb and Jaelan Phillips. Between the two, the trickle down effect for the rest of the room creates a loaded group on paper and, potentially, tough sledding for depth options to make the roster.
For one of Miami’s recent late-round draft choices, the hurdles between now and roster cuts just got even more steep. Injuries are an unfortunate part of the game at every level — but newly announced injury this week could not have come at a worse time in more ways than one.

“(Kamara) is in the (concussion) protocol and occurred on the day that we were traveling. So we left him back and didn’t travel with him.”
— Head coach Mike McDaniel on second-year EDGE rusher Mohamed Kamara
Mohamed Kamara, the team’s fifth-round draft choice in the 2024 NFL Draft, had a quiet rookie season. He played in just five games despite all of the injuries on the edge for the Dolphins and logged 56 total snaps, 26 on defense and 30 on special teams. 2025 was supposed to be a critical year to show growth. Instead, he’s had a relatively quiet start to camp this summer.
And now this.
Kamara was injured, per head coach Mike McDaniel, at Miami’s Wednesday morning practice before an afternoon flight to Chicago. Entering into the concussion protocol, he was not afforded the opportunity to travel with the team to Chicago and as of Friday was still not with the team, per McDaniel’s comments. Let’s start with the obvious from a football sense: Kamara can’t afford to miss time given he needs to create enthusiasm for his outlook and opportunity to contribute to this year’s roster. That, in and of itself, is a tough blow for a young defender clawing for security in a loaded room.
But then there’s the other part of this trip for Miami to consider, as well. The Dolphins are spending 11 nights on the road together between Chicago and Detroit with the objective to be spending valuable time together as a team. Kamara missing the front end of that experience at a minimum is pouring salt into the wound of an already poorly-timed injury.

Kamara can absolutely hop on a commercial flight when he’s cleared and re-join his teammates. Hopefully it’s able to happen as soon as possible. But given the phases of the concussion protocol, he feels likely to miss at least a significant chunk, if not all, of the team’s long trip.
Kamara will need to find a way to make a loud statement with whatever time he’s going to have left between now and cuts — that narrow window can often times lead to added pressure. How he handles this tough hand he’s been dealt will say a lot about him as a player for the 2025 Miami Dolphins.
Make no mistake about it, this is a tough draw for a player already behind the 8-ball in more ways than one.
