NY Giants training camp 2025 highlights from practice field sideline

See and hear New York Giants players during training camp practices from the sideline in East Rutherford.

ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – The New York Giants are embracing the urgency with which Brian Daboll wants them to play once the games count in the standings.

It’s one of the reasons Daboll has decided to start Russell Wilson at quarterback in Saturday’s preseason opener here against the Buffalo Bills, as first reported by NorthJersey.com and The Record.

The Wilson news sends a message to the locker room that there are no layups, even in the exhibition season, and for a team that struggled early each of the past two seasons, especially last year en route to a three-win campaign, forcing the issue in order to set a psychological and physical tone would be significant if that becomes reality.

The Giants have not put much pressure on rookie fifth-round pick Marcus Mbow, allowing him to settle into the pros this summer with the second team at the start at training camp. Slowly but surely, Mbow has made steady progress, earning chances at right tackle and left tackle, even getting reps with the first team.

The best thing you can say about Mbow against the Bills: he had a quiet performance shuttling back and forth between right and left tackle, and that was a good thing.

Abdul Carter was on the field for six plays, three snaps in pass rush situations. The No. 3 overall pick pressured Bills quarterback Mitch Trubisky on each of those three plays. It’s going to be fun to watch Carter in Tuesday’s first of two joint practices with the Jets.

Carter whipped one of the Bills starting interior lineman when he lined up at three-technique. Then he split wide and showed great burst against Bills starting left tackle Dion Dawkins.

It’s been a rough couple seasons for Graham Gano with injuries, so much so that the veteran was at the center of speculation regarding his salary cap number and debate over whether he is still valuable.

We have not seen Gano kick much in training camp, but he got some action in the first half Saturday, making the most of those opportunities to remind all how reliable he was previously.

Gano, 38, connected from beyond 50 yards three times, using a doink off the right goalpost to convert a 51-yard yarder. He was also good from 53 and 51.

The Giants have to love what they have seen from their rookie quarterback. Poise. Precision. Pocket awareness. Even some grit under pressure.

Dart completed 12-of-19 for 154 yards and a touchdown, leading the Giants to a touchdown and two field goals in three of his four series. His first scoring strike of the preseason was a 29-yard dart to Lil’ Jordan Humphrey. Early on, Dart was operating against the Bills’ starting defense with personnel from the Giants’ second and third teams.

Dart also rushed three times for 24 yards, eluding the rush and picking his way through the muck.

Would imagine Jameis Winston will get the third quarter and Tommy DeVito the fourth.

Keep checking back throughout the day with updates.

A lot to like from Jaxson Dart so far in relief of Russell Wilson after one series. He has shown poise in the pocket, has avoided negative plays and just showed off his touch with the pretty 29-yard touchdown pass to Lil’ Jordan Humphrey as the Giants jumped ahead 10-0.

Dart is 6-of-8 for 91 yards and that touchdown.

Graham Gano is good from 53. Nice start to the preseason for him. A pair of penalties on James Hudson short-circuited that drive. The Giants are waiting for the return of Andrew Thomas, who remains on PUP, but is making progress. Tyrone Tracy had five touches on the drive and Russell Wilson went 6-of-7 for just 28 yards. His best completion was an 11-yarder to Wan’Dale Robinson, who ran a pretty comeback route up the left sideline and got free from Bills corner Tre’Davius White.

The Brian Daboll homecoming

Spent time in the tunnel by the home and visiting locker rooms before the game and the reception for Brian Daboll was certainly a welcoming one. A lot of hugs and laughs for the Giants’ coach, who grew up here and spent four years as the offensive coordinator of the Bills. His tenure in Buffalo catapulted the 50-year-old to the Giants’ job.

What we expect

While Wilson will start, expect a lot of Jaxson Dart against the Bills. The Giants want to see the rookie in this environment. This won’t be an “all hands on deck” situation, mind you, and the approach should be to play those players who are healthy enough to play. You don’t want to take on unnecessary risk, and with the consecutive joint practices with the Jets looming in Florham Park and East Rutherford next Tuesday and Wednesday, the bigger picture should also remain in focus.

Pregame thoughts

I’m not expecting to see Malik Nabers or Dexter Lawrence in this game. Same goes for Evan Neal, who was banged up in Wednesday’s practice and spent Thursday with the training staff. It’s an unfortunate situation for Neal, who was likely staring at a good share of reps as he continues to attempt the transition from tackle to guard.

Now the challenge for Neal will be to get back to be on the field for Tuesday’s first of two joint practices against the Jets in Florham Park.
