Sports agent Jeff Sperbeck’s death after falling from a golf cart driven by longtime friend and business partner John Elway in a private California golf community in April did not include any criminal activity, according to a Denver television station’s report.
Riverside County Sheriff Chad Bianco previously told The Denver Post that Sperbeck’s death “appears to be a horrific accident,” then he repeated those sentiments Friday to KUSA-TV.
“We’ve talked to everyone involved and we found nothing new,” he told the station. “There was nothing criminal. It was what we’ve been saying all along, that this was a tragic accident.”
Sheriff’s officials plan to make a formal announcement about the investigation in the coming days, the station reported.
Sperbeck was taken off life support April 30, four days after he fell from a golf cart driven by the former Denver Broncos quarterback at The Madison Club.
The sheriff’s office did not begin investigating the incident until days later, after a wave of media attention.
Bianco told KUSA he reviewed video of the fall “100 times” and could not find an explanation for why Sperbeck fell. Elway was articulate and responsive in a recording of the initial 911 call and was not slurring his words, the sheriff told the station.
The Riverside County Coroner’s Office ruled Sperbeck’s death an accident in May.
Bianco could not immediately be reached for comment Friday night.
