OVERLAND PARK, Kan. —
Red and gold balloons, #15 jerseys and tablecloths saying “We miss you” marked the first Chiefs watch party of the season in one Overland Park bar.
For the last several years, a gameday at the Kingdom Bar and Grille meant the Chiefs on every TV and lifelong fan Ronda Pettus leading the cheers.
“She was the life of the party,” said Lori Cleary. “Ronda, she loved her Chiefs.”
Cleary was one of Ronda’s best friends and spent those Sundays right beside her at the Kingdom Bar and Grille.
“She had Chiefs shoes, shirt, the headband and everything,” Cleary said.
Ronda’s white Patrick Mahomes jersey was courtesy of her son, Grant Bradshaw, who’s just happy his 70-year-old mother found a place so welcoming.
“She just loved the way the atmosphere was,” Bradshaw said. “And everybody was really inviting to her. This is where she watched football.”
But to start the new season, Ronda isn’t here. She died a few weeks before the kickoff to the Chiefs’ first preseason game.
Despite that, she still managed to get all of her friends and family to the Kingdom Bar and Grille for a watch party Saturday night.
“This was the place that she brought us all in for the game,” Bradshaw said. “She wanted us all to be close, and this is how she wanted to do it.”
Before kickoff between the Kansas City Chiefs and Arizona Cardinals, Ronda’s friends and family watched as pictures and videos of her life played on the bar’s large projector.
“This is what she would have wanted,” Bradshaw said. “There’s nothing else. We want all this family together.”
The first Chiefs game without Ronda will be difficult for her family and friends, but they know she isn’t far.
“I know she’s here,” Cleary said. “She’ll be here with us in spirit.”
