GREEN BAY — Jayden Reed spent Saturday night’s 30-10 loss to the New York Jets as a spectator, an orthopedic walking boot on his left foot as he hobbled around the Green Bay Packers’ sideline.
After the debacle of a preseason opener was over, the Packers leading receiver each of the past two seasons had very few answers when it came to his status — and whether the foot injury would put his availability for the Sept. 7 regular-season opener against the Detroit Lions in peril.
“I don’t want to be the one to speak on it,” Reed said.
But head coach Matt LaFleur was willing to speak on it, and he certainly sounded worried.
“It’s unfortunate but hopefully we’ll get him back before the regular season,” LaFleur said. Asked if there was actual concern that Reed wouldn’t be back for the opener, LaFleur replied, “Potentially. I think anytime you see a guy in a boot, that’s a concern.”
Reed, who dealt with a toe issue earlier in camp thought to have been caused by a problem with his cleats, said this injury is unrelated to that one. The toe injury was on his right foot, Reed said.
Asked what caused this injury, Reed replied, “I just cut wrong off my foot and [it’s] just a little sore, battling a little something. … Just taking it day by day.”
Reed has led the Packers in both receptions and receiving yardage each of his first two seasons, catching 64 passes for 793 yards and eight touchdowns on 94 targets as a rookie in 2023 and 55 passes for 857 yards and six touchdowns on 75 targets last season.
But Reed also shared the Packers’ team lead in dropped passes last season with nine, and he largely disappeared down the stretch, managing only 11 catches for 164 yards and no touchdowns over the final five games, which LaFleur attributed to Reed being “a little bit banged up” late in the year.
Reed had been having a strong camp until sitting out Thursday’s practice with the foot issue.
Reed was one of four wide receivers to not dress for Saturday night’s loss, along with Christian Watson (on the physically unable to perform list on his way back from knee surgery); Dontayvion Wicks (sidelined for more than a week with a calf injury); and rookie third-round pick Savion Williams, who has been in and our of the lineup because of a concussion.
“You’re going to face adversity. That just happens, and you’ve got to find out how to respond when things … when you face adversity you’ve just got to find ways to respond to it.”
