Wrapping up heat acc week with a stack of news, notables, factoids and other random items.
1. We’ll call this nugget the 300-club: Three quarterbacks who threw for 300 or more yards in a game last fall are set to return in 2025. That list: Fleetwood’s Chase McMonagle, who went up top for 300-plus air yards twice last season; 309 vs. Kennard-Dale and 308 vs. Manheim Central. Fun fact: McMonagle heaved the two longest TD passes from scrimmage in the league in 2024: A 97-yarder vs. Warwick and a 95-yarder vs. Kennard-Dale. … Daniel Boone’s Haydn Moyer had a 349-yard passing night vs. Muhlenberg. … And Conestoga Valley’s Sawyer Esbenshade went airborne for 324 yards vs. Ephrata. He also five TD passes in that game against the Mountaineers, the second-most in a game by any L-L QB last year. The most? Garden Spot’s A.J. Hurst had six TD tosses vs. Notre Dame-Green Pond, the same night he threw for 459 yards — the most by any L-L QB in a game last fall. That was the night ND-GP outlasted Sparty Nation 71-64. … Two returning L-L backs bolted for 300 or more rushing yards in a game in 2024: Solanco FB Johnny Garcia rumbled for 363 yards vs. Eastern York, and Muhlenberg ace Cameron Small scooted for 346 yards vs. Exeter. Small had four other 200-plus yard efforts last season: 295 yards vs. Daniel Boone, 290 yards vs. Conestoga Valley, 257 yards vs. Elizabethtown, and 209 yards vs. William Allen in the Eastern Conference 5A title game, as Small cracked the 2,000-yard club for the Muhls in 2024.Â
2. Speaking of Small, he piled up a league-best seven 2-point conversion plays last season. Muhlenberg QB Adriel Baez — who is to return behind center for the Muhls — had five 2-point plays, second-most in the L-L in 2024. … Two returning players had 90-plus yard TD sprints from scrimmage last year: Lancaster Catholic’s Brandon Way had the longest TD run with a 96-yard jaunt vs. Schuylkill Valley, and Wilson’s Monty Greer jackknifed 95 yards for a TD vs. Reading. … Two returning players fell on blocked punts in the end zone for special teams touchdowns last fall: Manheim Central DE Ryan Wissler against Garden Spot, and Cocalico DE Nick McArdle against Conrad Weiser. Ironically, McArdle’s brother, Jerry McArdle, blocked that punt vs. Weiser.
3. Wilson coach Doug Dahms is set for 50th year in the program, his 20th year as the Bulldogs’ head coach, and he’s been a part of — wait for it — 460 victories in his time in West Lawn. Dahms needs four wins to join the 200-W club as the head coach. All incredible numbers, as Wilson tries to defend its Section 1 title.Â
