Japan forward Daizen Maeda was voted the Scottish Premiership Player of the Year by his fellow players on Monday after helping Celtic secure a fourth straight league title early with a league-leading 16 goals so far.

The 27-year-old speedster, who has bagged 33 goals across all competitions this term, received the award from the Professional Footballers’ Association Scotland after votes were cast by players across Scottish league divisions.

Maeda was also voted Celtic’s Player of the Year by his teammates.

“I didn’t imagine this, but I just carried on what I’ve been doing before and I’m glad it led to a positive outcome,” Maeda said.

Celtic have three more league games to play before facing Aberdeen in the Scottish Cup final on May 24. They are bidding to claim the domestic treble after also winning the Scottish League Cup in December.

“I want to get goals and assists that contribute to the team winning,” Maeda said.
