Chargers’ left tackle Rashawn Slater ruled out for season
Los Angeles Chargers left tackle Rashawn Slater has been ruled out for the entire 2025 season after suffering a torn patellar tendon during practice.

The first full weekend of NFL preseason football wraps up in Los Angeles where the host Chargers face off against the New Orleans Saints.
For the first time since 1994, the Chargers played in the Hall of Fame game to open up their preseason schedule. They beat the Lions 34-7 in that July 31 contest to officially start the new season.
Since then, the Chargers have had disheartening news. Franchise left tackle Rashawn Slater suffered a season-ending knee injury. Los Angeles is moving starting right tackle Joe Alt over to the left side to fill in and Trey Pipkins III will fill in for Alt on the right side. None are expected to play much, if at all, in Sunday’s game against New Orleans. Their depth will be tested as the team looks to solidify its offensive line in coach Jim Harbaugh’s second season.
The coach he replaced, Brandon Staley, will be on the other sideline for the Saints‘ preseason opener. Staley is New Orleans’ defensive coordinator under former Chargers offensive coordinator Kellen Moore, who is entering his first season as a head coach in the NFL.
New Orleans has a quarterback competition between rookie second-round pick Tyler Shough and second-year passer Spencer Rattler. That battle could spill into Sunday’s game as both players could see their first live action of the 2025 NFL season. Staley’s defense has lots of new faces with four new starters and a further four rookies looking for their first game experience of the year as well.
