It’s finally here. After months of change from the coaching staff to the depth chart, the New Orleans Saints will kick off their 2025 preseason at SoFi Stadium on Sunday against the Los Angeles Chargers. This may just be an exhibition game, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t any stakes involved. There’s a ton of pressure riding on young quarterbacks Spencer Rattler (who will start) and Tyler Shough (who will get plenty of reps) to give fans something to believe in.

We’ll be bringing you live updates, scores, and highlights from the game. Follow along:

Khristian Boyd nearly gets a safety, but for a very specific rule

Second-year nose tackle Khristian Boyd needs plays like this one, where he bullied the Chargers offensive line and drove quarterback Taylor Heinicke back for a loss of yards — and what looked like a sack-safety. But the officials reviewed the play with instant replay and found Heinicke went down at the 1-yard line, not the end zone, which took points off the board for New Orleans.

Saints special teams gets a turnover, but offense can’t capitalize

The Chargers muffed a punt and the Saints special teams unit came through with a recovery, giving Spencer Rattler a great opportunity to punch in a touchdown. But the offense couldn’t seal the deal, and ultimately got stopped for a loss of yards on fourth down at the goal line. Rattler’s inexperience showed when he missed an open receiver on second down.

Will Clapp walks off with an early injury

Clapp was starting in lieu of Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy, but needed help walking off the field after getting banged up on the Saints offense’s second play from scrimmage. With McCoy inactive, this meant more reps for rookie center Torricelli Simpkins III, who is expected to man the pivot point on the third-string offense. Clapp previously played for the Chargers, too.

Saints’ first preseason drive starts with a penalty

Well, it wasn’t the first play, but it was the second one. All three of the team’s top defensive ends were given the afternoon off (Chase Young, Carl Granderson, and Cameron Jordan), which meant their backups got the start. Veteran journeyman Chris Rumph had one spot and third-year draft pick Isaiah Foskey had the other. Rumph was fouled for jumping offsides on second down, but L.A.’s try at a deep shot fell incomplete on the free play.

Saints offensive line debuts a new look, depth chart

Here’s how the unit looked in warmups, though we should acknowledge Pro Bowl center Erik McCoy was held out as a precaution, and second-team left tackle Landon Young is dealing with an undisclosed injury. The first, second, and third units from left to right:

Kelvin Banks Jr., Trevor Penning, Will Clapp, Cesar Ruiz, Taliese FuagaDillon Radunz, Kyle Hergel, Torricelli Simpkins, Easton Kilty, Barry WesleyJosiah Ezirim, Shane Lemieux, Torricelli Simpkins, Easton Kilty, Jonathan Mendoza

Radunz had mainly played guard, not tackle, at training camp but the Saints are giving him a chance to show off some versatility. It’s interesting that Simpkins and Kilty, both undrafted rookies, are getting so many reps with the second and third offensive lines.

Chris Olave, Alontae Taylor among Saints players not in uniform

While guys like Alvin Kamara and Rashid Shaheed dressed out, they aren’t expected to see many reps in this exhibition game. A small crowd of players were sidelined in street clothes, including Olave, Taylor, offensive lineman Landon Young, running back Devin Neal, and wide receivers Chris Tyree and Moochie Dixon. They’ve all been dealing with various injuries in recent days. So has safety J.T. Gray.

However, a couple of players who were initially not warming up were spotted in uniform. That group included Kamara, Shaheed, center Erik McCoy, linebacker Demario Davis, and defensive linemen Cameron Jordan and Bryan Bresee, among others.

Saints kicker Charlie Smyth gets mixed results in long-distance warmups

Smyth, the team’s second-year kicker from Ireland, hit one of his warmup field goals from 64 yards but bounced his other attempt off the crossbar. He has a big leg but accuracy has been an issue this summer.

Wide receiver Chris Olave was sidelined in a precautionary move after tweaking his ankle on Thursday. He finished that practice session after having it taped up, but the Saints rested him on Friday and he isn’t expected to play in Sunday’s preseason game.
