The Bucs had a need at the cornerback position heading into the NFL Draft and addressed it, but could they do it again with a trade? Nick Shook of NFL Media seems to think so in the way of a trade for Jalen Ramsey from the Miami Dolphins.
Jalen Ramsey would be a smart trade target for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers despite their recent draft of two corners, because of his elite skill set and the immediate impact he could have on the team.
While the Bucs did add rookie cornerbacks in the draft, their development might take time. Ramsey offers a proven track record, having been one of the NFL’s top corners for years. His presence on the field would instantly elevate the Bucs’ secondary, providing leadership.Â
Ramsey’s physicality and ability to shut down top receivers would be invaluable to a Tampa Bay defense that struggled mightily the last few seasons. As a two-time All-Pro and Super Bowl champion, his experience is priceless, and he could mentor the younger corners while holding down his side of the field. Ramsey excels in both man and zone coverage, making him versatile and well-suited for Tampa’s defensive scheme. His ability to blanket top receivers and create turnovers would give defensive coordinator Todd Bowles more flexibility in game planning. While promising, the Bucs’ defensive backfield could benefit from his seasoned leadership, helping the rookies and other corners reach their full potential faster. Lastly, Ramsey could potentially be acquired without breaking the bank.
Tampa could capitalize on the lower market value due to Ramsey’s contract. This would allow the Bucs to improve their defense while maintaining cap flexibility and at a value in terms of trade compensation.
