DAWSON, Ga. (WALB) – Marco Kirk takes over a Terrell County football program searching for an identity. The new head coach is not just thinking about this season, but building a culture that breeds winning for years to come.
“They hadn’t had a middle school program I think in the last 4 to 5 years. It starts at the middle school level, so you know we are trying to do everything we possibly can to maximize those younger players by the time they get to the high school level they’ll be fundamentally sound and they’ll be ready to play football,” said Kirk
While Kirk works to build from the bottom up, year one at the high school level will be a challenge. The new head man has started from the ground floor, with the focus coming before the team even hits the field this Friday night.
“We’re going to have to change the way we do things in the weight room. Everything is going to have to change, our minds in the weight room are going to have to change. We got to work out with more energy, more passion and that’s something we’ve been implementing this summer is just getting the kids in the weight room just working out with a whole lot more energy.”
On the field, Kirk plans to lean on the teams strengths and despite some injuries upfront you can expect the Greenwave to lean on the bigs and get the ball to their athletes.
“Those guys that have speed we want to get the ball to them in space and let them do their thing and let them go to work. We got some horses upfront that are very strong, we are going to utilize those guys upfront and we got a group of running backs that run the ball extremely well and we just going to utilize those guys the best we can.”
Kirk said this year will be a process. Although he wants to win every game, a successful season to Kirk and the immediate goal is to get past last years win total of two games. He loves the energy from the team heading into the year. The Greenwave will open the season at home August 16th against Calvary Christian.
