Colts’ OL Quenton Nelson offered some high praise for QB Anthony Richardson following a recent training camp practice.
Indianapolis Colts’ offensive lineman Quenton Nelson has seen improved play from quarterback Anthony Richardson this summer.
In fact, Nelson said that Richardson was having his “best camp ever.”
So what is it about Richardson’s performance up to this point that has stood out to Nelson?
“I would just say his energy,” Nelson said on Sunday. “His experience going into Year 3. Maturing and also what he’s doing on the field with progressions and accuracy and spreading the ball around to all different guys. He’s been doing a really good job.”
After completing just 47% of his passes last season, Richardson’s priority this offseason was on being more accurate on the short to intermediate throws. To accomplish this, he went back to his mechanics and prioritized his footwork, which for a quarterback is oftentimes where accuracy begins.
The results of that work have often being showing up on the practice field this summer for Richardson, which includes going 11-for-16 passing during Sunday’s practice. There have still been down days, but overall, he’s been much more consistent and has bounced back well following those tough outings.
Following the Colts‘ night practice, Steichen said that everything for Richardson was “cleaner” and that his decision-making has been sound.
Steichen would also tell ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler that he’s seen “great strides” from Richardson as a leader.
After having to exit the Colts’ preseason opener early, it’ll be vital that Richardson displays this improved play against Green Bay, where he won’t start, but will see extended action.
