The Los Angeles Rams completed their first preseason game on Saturday against the Dallas Cowboys. While the coaching staff will value practices and time in the meeting rooms, the preseason could still determine roster spot. Players like Willie Lampkin, Shaun Dolac, and others made their case for a spot on the final 53. Here is my latest 53-man roster prediction.

Quarterback (3): Matthew Stafford, Jimmy Garoppolo, Stetson Bennett

Coming into the preseason, there were some questions about whether or not Stetson Bennett had the third quarterback spot. However, Bennett undoubtedly had his best game since joining the Rams. He looked confident and comfortable in the pocket, playing on time. For the first time in his career, he showed some upside to potentially be the long-term backup.

Running Back (4): Kyren Williams, Blake Corum, Jarquez Hunter, Cody Schrader

There may be a competition for the RB2 spot behind Kyren Williams. However, a running back position battle that hasn’t been talked about is the one between Cody Schrader and Ronnie Rivers. It’s worth noting that Rivers got some playing time late in the third quarter. His roster spot may not be as guaranteed as some thought. Schrader showed off some explosiveness and is a player that may be worth trying to keep around.

Wide Receiver (6): Puka Nacua, Davante Adams, Tutu Atwell, Jordan Whittington, Konata Mumpfield, Xavier Smith

Given the depth and competition at other spots on the roster, there may be a discussion for the Rams to only keep five wide receivers. If the Rams are going to incorporate more 12 personnel, that may be even more reason to only keep five. At the same time, it seems Xavier Smith has taken some strides at the wide receiver and also offers some upside in the return game. With that being the case, it’s going to be hard to keep him off of the roster.

Tight End (4): Tyler Higbee, Terrance Ferguson, Colby Parkinson, Davis Allen

The Rams tight ends seem set with these four. They will likely keep a fifth or sixth on the practice squad, but the team can feel good about this group.

Offensive Line (9): Alaric Jackson, Steve Avila, Coleman Shelton, Kevin Dotson, Rob Havenstein, DJ Humphries, Warren McClendon, KT Leveston, Beaux Limmer, Willie Lampkin

The offensive line is a position in which the Rams are going to have to make some difficult decisions. At the end of the day, they are going to have to find a way to keep Willie Lampkin on the roster. A big reason why Lampkin went undrafted was because he was a size anomaly. Nobody thought he could handle the NFL at 5’11. However, now he has good tape that proves he can handle the physicality. If he becomes available, teams are going to jump on him.

Linebacker (4): Omar Speights, Nate Landman, Chris Paul Jr., Troy Reeder

It’s worth noting that Troy Reeder did not play in the preseason game against the Cowboys. Given how the Rams typically handle the preseason, it would be hard to see Reeder not make the roster. The Rams typically don’t play their starters or key depth. Meanwhile, Dolac was playing deep into the game on Saturday. This isn’t to say that Dolac doesn’t deserve a roster spot. However, it was Reeder playing next to Speights when Landman was out in the joint practice against the Cowboys. Reeder may not start, but they will likely value his experience as key depth.

EDGE (5): Jared Verse, Byron Young, Josaiah Stewart, Nick Hampton, Brennan Jackson

The edge rusher position is one that could get interesting at roster cuts. It wouldn’t be surprising to see the Rams move on from Nick Hampton. However, keeping only four would make them pretty thin on the edge and Hampton is experienced. At the end of the day, the Rams may opt to keep five for the initial cuts.

Cornerback (5): Ahkello Witherspoon, Darious Williams, Cobie Durant, Emmanuel Forbes, Charles Woods

This is another position that’s going to be difficult to predict. The depth at cornerback between Josh Wallace, Charles Woods, Cam Lampkin, and AJ Green all played well against the Cowboys. It’s unlikely that the Rams would be able to get all of those guys on the practice squad, meaning one is going to need to make the roster. Woods provides some depth in the slot behind Cobie Durant, but Josh Wallace is someone else to watch.

Safety (4): Quentin Lake, Kam Curl, Kam Kinchens, Jaylen McCollough

One player to watch here is going to be Nate Valcarcel who showed his ability as a deep safety against the Cowboys. He made a few nice tackles in space and had a pass breakup. With that said, he will likely be easier to get onto the practice squad than some of the others. Given how much Chris Shula utilized his safeties last year, four may not seem like a lot, but the Rams also have some versatility with a few of their cornerbacks.

Defensive Line (6): Poona Ford, Kobie Turner, Braden Fiske, Tyler Davis, Larrell Murchison, Ty Hamilton

Six players may seem thin on the defensive line, but the Rams still have some good variety here. Kobie Turner and Braden Fiske provide a nice rotation when it comes rushing the passer. Tyler Davis, Larrell Murchison, and Ty Hamilton bring good depth on early downs as run-stoppers. Desjuan Johnson could make the roster, but the Rams are going to have to make some difficult decisions.

Special Teams (3): Joshua Karty, Ethan Evans, Alex Ward

The easiest roster decision that the Rams will have to make is on special teams. These are a very solid three.
