ASHBURN, Va. (7News) — The Washington Commanders held an intrasquad scrimmage Tuesday at OrthoVirginia Training Center. The offense and defense split into two teams, joining together for what head coach Dan Quinn called the “Burgundy and Gold game.”
It was chippy, competitive, and there was a healthy amount of trash talk. The gold team won, 14-0, and took home celebratory T-shirts with the phrase “ALL ASHBURN” lined across the front.
Those players also earned another advantage — bragging rights, sure to be used by them over the next few days, at least.
“Belt to a**, man. That’s what we do,” defensive tackle Javon Kinlaw said after the scrimmage. “I’m about to go in there and talk my s***.”
Running back Jeremy McNichols, who played on the losing side, called the scrimmage a “good change of pace” from the usual repetitive practice schedule during a long training camp.
He added that the gold team will be talking “all week, but it’s all good. We’ll get them back.”
Safety Jeremy Reaves had a different perspective after the win, saying, “the job stays between the lines, and that’s where it ends at.”
“Yes, we are competing, but at the same time we’re trying to get each other better because I’m going to need that guy when we start playing,” Reaves said.

Tight end Ben Sinnott, who played with the burgundy team, said scoring no points as an offensive player was frustrating. The first-team offense scored no points against the first-team defense.
Jayden Daniels led the burgundy offense alongside Deebo Samuel, Luke McCaffrey, Brian Robinson, and Zach Ertz, among others. Notable players on the gold team included Kinlaw, Von Miller, Trey Amos, Bobby Wagner, Frankie Luvu and Daron Payne.
There was another surprise storyline at Tuesday’s practice. Wide receiver Terry McLaurin, amid a hold-in as he negotiates a contract extension, talked with GM Adam Peters before the scrimmage. It was the first time McLaurin and Peters spoke with media observing during this year’s training camp.
McLaurin stood on the sidelines for the entirety of the scrimmage in a red Commanders hoodie. The 29-year-old shared a handful of conversations with staffers and teammates, including Daniels, but remained separate from the players while the action unfolded.
The Commanders are back in action Aug. 18 at Northwest Stadium for a preseason bout against the Cincinnati Bengals.
