UNITY TWP., Pa. — Pittsburgh Steelers head coach Mike Tomlin provided an injury update after the final training camp practice at St. Vincent College on Tuesday. Tomlin’s unit has a couple of bumps and bruises heading into their joint scrimmage and preseason game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers later this week, but nothing is really major.
“We got some people working their way back to us who are further or complete participates guys like Jalen Ramsey and JPJ and others. It’s just a part of the process,” Tomlin said. “We still have some guys missing out a little bit, but we can still categorize those guys as day-to-day. Guys like Calvin Austin and Jonnu Smith and others. Hopefully they’ll be back to us sooner rather than later.”
Cornerback Darius Slay returned to practice after suffering an injury on Monday.
In addition to Austin (minor abdominal muscle injury) and Smith (knee), cornerbacks Donte Kent (right foot/ankle) and Cory Trice (hamstring), outside linebacker Alex Highsmith (groin), center Ryan McCollum (undisclosed), guard Spencer Anderson (undisclosed) remain out. Highsmith was running around on the second field during Tuesday’s practice.
Steelers rookie defensive tackle Yahya Black is dealing with an injury that caused him to miss practice on Tuesday. That was the only new injury. But there was a scare with four-time NFL MVP quarterback Aaron Rodgers. Rodgers was evaluated and taped up for a lower right leg injury.
Tomlin said the injury to Rodgers happened when he got stepped on. He called it “nothing of any significance” and said that he “didn’t miss a rep.”

Black was seen wearing street clothes and a huge wrap around his right arm before the last training camp practice at St. Vincent College kicked off.
It’s unclear what exactly the injury is that Black is dealing with, but he has worn a brace on the same arm during recent training camp practices.
Tomlin did not mentioned Black when discussing injuries, so it appears to not be a major concern.
Black has put his massive 6-foot-6, 336-pound frame on display all camp, seemingly patting down passes every day.
