Dallas Cowboys owner and de facto GM Jerry Jones has been in the news for a lot of negative reasons lately, usually centering on the team’s recent struggles. But after making a stunning revelation about his own health, he’s getting even more attention this morning.

The fifth episode of America’s Team: The Gambler and His Cowboys featured Jones speaking about a cancer treatment for Stage 4 melanoma that he underwent 12 years ago. In an interview with the Dallas Morning News, he revealed that he was first diagnosed back in 2010 and underwent a treatment of Programmed Cell Death Protein 1, also known as PD-1. He declared that the treatment was a success and he no longer has any tumors.
“I was saved by a fabulous treatment and great doctors and a real miracle [drug] called PD-1 [therapy]. I went into trials for that PD-1 and it has been one of the great medicines. I now have no tumors.”

NFL fans are not in a charitable mood these days as far as anything Jerry Jones says or does. While there have been plenty of people offering sympathy to Jones on his cancer diagnosis and treatment, many more have either called it a ploy for sympathy amid the contract standoff with linebacker Micah Parsons or just an outright lie.
“This disclosure is to distract sympathy from the Micah Parsons contract,” one user on X responded to the news.

“I somehow doubt this,” wrote another.
“He can beat stage 4 cancer but can’t win a super bowl in the past 30 years. God has a funny way of working. Mr Burns germs indestructible.”
Still others have openly expressed that they wish Jones would have stepped down or even passed on as a result of the cancer.
“Damn. Cowboys would’ve won another super bowl if he lost that battle.”
“We were this close to greatness.”

“Not even the Lord can end the Cowboys’ suffering. He tried. This man clearly made a pact with the devil.”

That’s all very harsh. But Cowboys fans have been driven pretty much up the wall by decades of postseason futility. Only two teams in the NFL have gone longer without reaching a conference title game, let alone the Super Bowl and none of those teams are in their own conference.
That fact has been repeated at them ad nauseum for over six months now, so it stands to reason that it’s starting to mess with everyone’s sense of compassion for the man they deem responsible.

On the plus side, if the Stage 4 melanoma treatment worked for Jerry Jones, hopefully it’s a sign that medical science is rapidly advancing to the point where almost anyone can win a battle against it.
