The Pittsburgh Steelers will try their hand at developing their own quarterback with a late-round pick, after selecting Ohio State’s Will Howard in the sixth round of the 2025 NFL Draft.
It’s been a while since the Steelers pursued such a project, with their last attempt at their own developmental quarterback prospect coming with current starter Mason Rudolph way back in 2018. Since then, the club has tried several ways to rectify its quarterback position, using a first-round draft pick on Kenny Pickett in 2022, trading for former Chicago Bears starter Justin Fields in 2024 and signing free agents Mitch Trubisky and Russell Wilson.
None of those moves have produced above-average quarterback play for the team. But does that mean the team is unable to develop a quarterback?
Alan Saunders joined Chris Carter on the Locked On Steelers Podcast to discuss the idea of the Steelers under Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith not being able to be the club to hope Howard. The guys also talked about the possibility of using a package of plays to showcase Howard’s ability and also how the Steelers draft class stacks up against the AFC North.
