More free agents tried out for the New Orleans Saints on Wednesday after the team hosted a dozen players for a group workout earlier in the week, but this group suggests things are bleak for a former second-round draft pick. Isaiah Foskey led the Saints defense in snaps played during their first preseason game, but he hardly registered on the box score. And now the team has brought in three players with similar size and skill sets who could take his roster spot.

Here’s the list, per Wednesday’s update to the daily NFL transactions wire:

Amare Barno. A former sixth-round pick with the Carolina Panthers, Barno weighed in at 6-foot-4 and 246 pounds coming out of Virginia Tech, and he has a reputation as a scheme-versatile player with experience at safety, linebacker, and defensive end. He struggled to put everything together in three years with the Panthers but clearly has sky-high athletic potential; he timed the 40-yard dash in just 4.37 seconds at the 2022 NFL Scouting Combine, fastest of all front-seven defenders. Maybe the Saints can get more out of him.

Jeremiah Martin. Martin wasn’t drafted after playing college football at Washington and Texas A&M, but he has the size the Saints look for at a listed 6-foot-3 and 265 pounds. He’s bounced around the league with a few different teams including the Cleveland Browns (twice), New York Giants, and Green Bay Packers, as well as the spring-league Arlington Renegades and Birmingham Stallions.

Oshane Ximines. The highest-drafted player in this group, Ximines was a fifth-round pick (out of Old Dominion) by the Giants back in 2019, and he has NFL size at 6-foot-4 and 256 pounds. Ximines posted 4.5 sacks and 25 combined tackles as a rookie but was bumped down in the rotation while dealing with injuries in the years that followed. He spent last season with the New England Patriots.

It’s been a frustrating career so far for Foskey, who had a strong resume coming out of school as Notre Dame’s all-time sacks leader. He nailed the pre-draft athletic testing and was talked up for his leadership skills as a former team captain. But we just haven’t seen those attributes through his time in New Orleans. The first wave of 53-man roster projections from around the Saints beat didn’t have him making the team. He may need a change of scenery to find his way in the NFL. It sure looks like the Saints are preparing to move on. We’ll see.
