Up to this point in the summer, there have been a few Chargers players vying for roster spots who have made strong impressions.
Safety Derwin James highlighted three rookies when asked which players flying under the radar to the general population are standing out to him.
“I like the way Marlowe Wax has been playing… I like the way a lot of guys in the secondary have been playing. They make plays every week on the ball. Like E [Eric Rogers]. RJ [Mickens], too,” James said.
Wax, the former Syracuse product, recently led the team in tackles in the Chargers’ preseason victory over the Saints with nine.
Rogers, the undrafted rookie out of Rutgers, was arguably the best player on the field this past weekend, as he amassed two interceptions, including a pick-six, and a pass breakup. Unfortunately, he suffered an ankle injury before the end of the game.
A sixth-round pick, Mickens, has been a solid presence at the safety position, flying around the field and making plays in coverage and against the run.
With two weeks left until the coaching staff has to narrow the roster down to 53 players, these three players are trending in the right direction to earn a spot, or, at the very least, a practice squad spot.
