The early story at training camp was that New York Jets quarterback Justin Fields and the passing game were struggling. Then arrived the first preseason game, where Fields was effective in a 30-10 blowout victory over the Green Bay Packers. In his one offensive series, the dual-threat QB completed 3-of-4 passing attempts and capped a 79-yard scoring drive by rushing for a 13-yard touchdown.

On Tuesday, the Jets held a joint practice with their crosstown rival New York Giants, their second preseason opponent. It was imperative for Fields to carry over the momentum from Saturday’s exhibition showcase. For the most part, he did.

Fields began 7-on-7 drills by completing seven consecutive passes, per The Athletic. In 11-on-11, the closest practice period to replicating an in-game scenario, Fields completed his first five passes. After a rougher stretch, the Jets’ signal-caller concluded a red-zone 11-on-11 drill with a beauty side-arm TD to roster-bubble tight end Jeremy Ruckert.

Fields ultimately completed 7-of-12 attempts in 11-on-11 drills and 7-of-8 during seven-on-seven. Jets offensive coordinator Tanner Engstand undoubtedly wanted to see his quarterback continue building on his brief but encouraging showing in Week 1 of the preseason. The occasional snag occurred versus a quality Giants defense, but Fields looked like a QB who’s hitting his stride.
