A former Carolina Panthers defender is returning to the NFC South.

According to NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport, free-agent cornerback C.J. Henderson is set to sign with the Atlanta Falcons. The 26-year-old played for the Panthers from 2021 to 2023.

Henderson attended the University of Florida from 2017 to 2019, where he was named a first-team All-SEC member as a junior and a two-time All-SEC member the two campaigns prior. The Miami, Fla. native went on to be selected by the Jacksonville Jaguars with the ninth overall pick of the 2020 NFL draft.

Then, not even two seasons into his pro career, Henderson would be traded to the Panthers along with a fifth-round pick in exchange for tight end Dan Arnold and a third-rounder. Henderson ended up starting in 22 of his 39 outings for Carolina—amassing 128 combined tackles, two interceptions, a sack and a fumble recovery.

The Panthers allowed Henderson’s rookie contract to expire following the 2023 campaign, opting not to exercise his fifth-year option. He has since picked up stints with the Houston Texans and Pittsburgh Steelers, but has not appeared in a regular-season game since his time in Carolina.
