Houston, meanwhile, is also looking for a bounce-back performance after their trip to Minnesota ended in disappointment. The Texans’ backup quarterback battle is one to keep an eye on, with Kedon Slovis, Davis Mills, and Graham Mertz vying to slot in behind C.J. Stroud. Mertz, however, had a rough initiation, tossing three interceptions while completing just 7 of 14 attempts.

On defense, the Texans are aiming to sharpen what is already considered one of their strengths. Rookie cornerback Jaylin Smith made a solid first impression with three tackles in his debut, and with proven talent like Derek Stingley Jr., Kamari Lassiter, and Jalen Pitre already patrolling the secondary, adding another playmaker could make Houston’s backfield downright suffocating.

Carolina Panthers team news

Carolina enters the weekend with an eye on fine-tuning its roster and ironing out wrinkles before the real grind begins. Bryce Young is firmly entrenched as the QB1, but the race for the clipboard job is still wide open between seasoned vet Andy Dalton and rookie Jack Plummer. Neither lit up the stat sheet in their preseason debut, but Plummer had the crisper outing, connecting on 6-of-10 passes for 79 yards.

Defensively, the Panthers have some work to do after surrendering 30 points to Cleveland. One bright spot, though, was rookie outside linebacker Nic Scourton, who turned heads with two solo tackles and a sack, showcasing the kind of burst and physicality that could earn him more snaps moving forward.
