Former San Francisco 49ers and New York Giants running back Matt Breida plans to retire from the NFL after seven seasons, according to ESPN.

Breida, 30, recently declined a workout request from the Miami Dolphins, which he played one season for in 2020. He last played in the NFL for the Giants in 2023. He re-joined the 49ers during training camp in 2024, but was released before the season.

Breida was a collegiate star at Georgia Southern before signing as an undrafted free agent with the 49ers in May 2017.

He played his first three seasons in San Francisco, recording 381 rushing attempts for 1,902 yards and six touchdowns, along with 67 receptions for 561 yards and four touchdowns, in 43 games played. The 5-foot-10, 195-pound back recorded a career-high 138 rushing yards and one touchdown in a 30-27 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 2 of the 2018 NFL season.

After three seasons with the 49ers, Breida was traded to the Dolphins for a fifth round pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. He also played one season for the Buffalo Bills in 2021 and two seasons for the Giants from 2022-23.

Breida finishes his NFL career with 575 rushing attempts for 2,652 yards (4.6 yards per rush) and nine touchdowns, as well as 120 receptions for 935 yards and six touchdowns.

“Breida’s retirement punctuates a remarkable seven-year journey, one defined by electrifying speed, dogged determination and resilience,” said Mary Kay Cabot, Cleveland Browns beat reporter for cleveland.com / The Plain Dealer. “From signing as an undrafted free agent out of Georgia Southern in 2017 to starring for four teams franchises, Breida forged a career that many only dream of.”
