BISMARCK, N.D. (KFYR) – St. Mary’s first year back in Double A went well. The Saints earned a trip to the state playoffs.
Now in year two, St. Mary’s returns their leading rusher and their leading receiver from last season, but the skill positions aren’t what head coach Toby Schweitzer is most excited about for the coming season
“All those guys you’re talking about, they’re great contributors, and they’re going to do a good job,” said Schweitzer. “But I’m more excited about is upfront. We got lots of skilled people, and they’re going to do a good job for us. But having an o-line is something that is really, really makes a coach feel good.”
“Really, we just want to move the line of scrimmage right up, right out the gates. We just want to run the ball upon the pound the rock, and then that’ll open up everything else after that,” said Saints senior offensive lineman Carter Michlitsch.
“These guys are my classmates. I decided to play with them all the time, and they’re getting huge. I mean, feels like, I feel like a king back there, just protected by my own army up there,” said Saints senior quarterback Jacoby Grimm.
Grimm’s back under center for his senior season, and the young signal caller isn’t lacking confidence in himself or his team.
“We’re ready to compete,” said Grimm. “I mean, up there is a different breed up there, but we’re, I feel like we’re a different breed too. So, we’re ready to kick people in the mouth this year and get things done. Focus on, like, doing your job. Can’t do too much. It’s not a one-man game. It’s a full team effort. So as long as I do my part and I help everybody else do their part, everybody does their jobs, the game will go your way.”
The Saints open their season at Grand Forks Central, but their home opener is against the same team that knocked St Mary’s out of the playoffs last year: Grand Forks Red River.
